Church of Christ, Scientist is established.
April 12, 1879
Members of the Christian Scientist Association authorize Mary Baker Eddy to organize a church at a meeting in Hawthorne Hall at 2 Park Street. Its purpose is to “reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” Incorporated on August 23, 1879, it meets initially in private homes, holds its first meeting in Charlestown on October 19, 1879, then meet at Hawthorne Hall beginning in November 1883, and move to a new church building in 1894.* Beginning with a dozen members, it grows to 8,700 in 1890, 55,000 in 1906, and 268,000 in the U.S. in 1936.
